Why do I need to install Firefox ActiveX plugin? Will it allow ActiveX controls to damage my computer?
In order to support all MobiTV features, we need to run Windows Media Player ActiveX control in Firefox. ActiveX controls are Windows programs that may be exploited to install viruses, adware, spyware, and the like. The power of ActiveX can be a big security risk. Firefox does not come with ActiveX support installed. That's why ActiveX plugin is needed. The plugin comes pre-configured to only run the Windows Media Player ActiveX controls. It will not impose any security risk to your computer. However, if you had Adblock extension installed, you must make sure that Adblock Options: Obj-Tabs is disabled. Otherwise, your system will run almost any ActiveX control. To verify the configuration, go to Firefox menu Tools, select Add-ons. There should be no check mark next to Obj-Tabs.

I have installed Firefox ActiveX plugin when I had Firefox 1.0. Now I am upgrading to Firefox 1.5 or 2.0. Do I need to install ActiveX plugin again?
Yes. Most methods of updating Firefox to a new version do not remove the ActiveX plugin, and there is no guarantee that the plugin version you have will work with the new version of Firefox. It is strongly recommended that you uninstall the ActiveX plugin before you update Firefox. Having the wrong version of the ActiveX plugin installed can cause other plugins (especially Flash) to malfunction. To uninstall ActiveX plugin,

  1. Close all instances of Firefox
  2. Go to the Firefox program folder (the location you installed Firefox to). The default location in Windows is 'C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\'
  3. Go into the plugins folder and delete the file 'npmozax.dll'
  4. Go back to the Firefox program folder, and then go into the components folder, and delete the files 'nsIMozAxPlugin.xpt' & 'nsAxSecurityPolicy.js'.
  5. Go back to the Firefox program folder, and then go into the defaults\pref folder, and delete the file 'activex.js'.
